Pumpkin Lattes & Gladiator Sandals

Have you switched from an iced coffee to a pumpkin latte while still wearing your gladiator sandals? Catch up – it’s time to make like-minded changes to your closet and your wardrobe. Grab your latte and follow me behind the closed doors of your closet!

Remove all your shoes from your closet (yes all) and line them up in the hall. Arrange them left to right, from sandals to Uggs.

Assess the sandals and throw out the ones where your dirty footprints could be outlined with a pen. Those babies go in the trash. Stack all of your summer shoes on their side in a clear boot box, you can fit about 10 to 15 pair in one box depending on the heels. Take your one, two or three boxes of summer shoes and stack them away – the key word here is away; let’s say attic or under the bed.

Now assess the fall shoes that are left in the hall. Remember, there are still cobblers in the world. Take all shoes/boots that need heels or polishing to your local shoe hospital and they will come back looking like new.

After collecting the dust bunnies, return your fall shoes to your closet in an organized, intuitive way. Those 7-inch Louboutins that you wear twice a year do not need to be at eye level, they can adorn the top shelf with the heels out so you can still pine over them. Line up your other high wire shoes with them.

Now put all of your flats together by color and line them up with toes out so you can peruse them while dressing.

Then put all of the rest of your shoes by type – clunky clogs, wedges etc., and group those by color. The massive collection of sneakers should be pared down, the reasons why are probably obvious. The rest of them should be stacked (or thrown) into mesh cubes. Link here for my favorite cubes.

Work your way down to the booties (by color) and then to the tall boots (again by color). Envision the shoe store, it is not a jumbled mess, nor should your shoe selection be! Make it shop-able – you’ll be amazed at the rotation that your shoes will begin to experience! Now stand back; take stock of what you have and what you don’t have. If all your shoes are black – Houston we have a problem! Time to shop with purpose – shop for color, texture & shine!

Enjoy the journey; your toes will thank you!
