Accessorize With Purpose

Accessorize with purpose blogFor those of you who seldom dress like it’s New Year’s Eve (that would be most), and have just flung the closet door shut because you have nothing to wear – don’t panic.

The good news is it’s easy to make an ordinary outfit shine with the right accessories and there is a fifty percent chance that the perfect accessory might already be in your closet.

Before embarking on your personal search-and-find, let’s broaden the Webster’s definition of accessory from “An item of clothing that is worn or used for a fashionable effect with an outfit”, to include jewelry, hosiery, scarves, belts, eyeglasses, handbags, and of course – shoes!

Check to see if you have something already buried in your treasure trove and if not, treat yourself to something new. Keep in mind that the week before the Holidays, most stores drastically reduce the price of accessories, so take advantage.

Pull out that outfit that you are struggling with, choose one or two things from the list below that could pull your look together with style, and off you go.

Shop with purpose and consider purchasing two of the following options:

Jewelry – great statement pieces like rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets can catapult your look without the Liz Taylor price tag!
Hosiery – stylish tights and stockings can give your look an edge and for you all black lovers, it can give you some color too.
Scarves – wrap them right and you can have multiple looks that add color, texture (think sequins or sparkled fabrics) and print to your wardrobe. Loop them at the neck or wrap them around your shoulders with your sleeveless dress.
Belts – yes, belts can be statement pieces and can emphasize a small waist and add color and texture to an outfit.
Eyeglasses – think of these as an accessory and not just a necessity. You have a casual shoe and a dressy shoe, why not spice up your eyeglasses too?
Handbags – let’s define this as just-the-right-size clutch. You don’t need much for a night on the town, so leave the suitcase at home.
Shoes – we all know that shoes make the man but they also make the outfit. Don’t feel like a 5-inch heel is mandatory as sequined ballet flats are all the rage!

Now, remember to choose only one or two great items. If you try wearing them all at once, you might end up looking like, well, like you tried!
