How To Determine Your Preferred Spring Pattern

womanwithflowersAs a stylist, I have many mantras that I share with my clients.

One of my favorites is Dress With Purpose.

What the heck might that mean when you get dressed tomorrow morning? Well, let’s start with your Starbucks coffee. Pretty damn sure when you order a grande skinny espresso macchiato; you are ordering with purpose. You have drilled down to your specific likes by size, fat content, bean strength and quantity of foam frosting!

Why then have you not drilled down in your wardrobe by size, fit, fabric, price, color and pattern? Pattern you ask?

Yes Gloria – pattern. One of the first questions I ask my clients is, “Are you attracted to florals or geometrics?” The usual answer is, “I have no clue, never thought about it!”

ShoesBut when I ask them what their favorite color is, they have an answer. I think that is a carry-over from their nursery school application, their first potential right or wrong answer that might determine their path in life. The girl that answered black was probably pegged as trouble at 4 years old!

But I digress. Here’s the problem with knowing your favorite color and not knowing what patterns you are attracted to. You end up with one-shot-wonders in your closet that become part of that elite 85% crowd that you NEVER wear! And of course you have never asked yourself, why the hell do I not wear those particular blouses, sweaters, dresses, skirts or scarves? After all they are my favorite color! Yes, true Gloria, but having Gerber daisies on your ass just might be what is stopping you!

ScarvesLet’s work on refining your purchase power so that you actually wear what you buy. Start with this – look around your house! What have you decorated with, florals or geometrics? Check your bedspreads, shower curtains, upholstery choices and even your artwork. No doubt those were conscious decisions based on the patterns.

Okay now let’s move to a few wardrobe pieces. I have added pics of obvious choices by category. Take a gander and pack that info into your dressing (and shopping) with purpose plans going forward.

doubledressI would love to hear from you on this – let me know if you have had any ah-ha moments as you walk around taking a mental house and closet inventory. Then of course, do share your new purchases with us!

If you struggle with anything related to your wardrobe, your confidence, your decisions or your lack of shopping skills – let’s talk!
