Little Rhodie is calling!

While we here in the greater Boston area are searching our closets for the now necessary winter hats, gloves and turtleneck sweaters (which we have been lucky not to need up until now) our fashionable neighbors in the South (and by south I mean, Providence, RI) are pulling out their designer dresses and platform pumps in anticipation for next week’s StyleWeek Providence.

But wait…you don’t have to be from the Ocean State to gain entrance to any number of fabulous fashion shows happening next week at the Providence Biltmore Hotel. You can purchase tickets on the StyleWeek website –and join the fashionistas from all over New England and New York who make the twice yearly trek to this fun and funky city in celebration of fashion. It’s only an hour (give or take) from Boston so grab your best girlfriends and make it a road trip! Leave early to avoid rush hour traffic and begin the evening with dinner at one of the many terrific restaurants populating this capital city. Better yet, book a room at the Biltmore for an overnight, then you can sip a glass of champagne at the after party without worry of a commute back home.

You can check out the entire calendar on their website, but here are some of my picks for the week. Hope to see you there!

Jessica Abernethy, Selahdor by David Chum and Jonathan Joseph Peters are all showing Sunday, January 22nd. If you can only attend one night, this would be my suggestion. All three are StyleWeek veterans, have very distinct styles and top quality craftsmanship. JJP is a project runway alum and the most theatrical of all. His shows are always a must-see for the creativity and imagination that go into them. (but don’t be fooled, his clothes are incredibly wearable!). It is no wonder he also serves as the creative director for StyleWeek Providence.

Maria Del Carmen Mercado, Monday, January 23rd @ 7PM. Maria is a fiber artist and designer who hand dyes fabrics used to create her apparel and accessories. She often infuses influences from her native Dominican Republic into her shows.

Sarah Prost, Saturday, January 28th @ 7PM. Sarah is a StyleWeek favorite, as much for her sweet personality and sunny optimism, as for her whimsical (menswear pieces recycled into womenswear) and feminine designs. Her clothing has somewhat of a vintage feel, without actually being “old”.

Now put down the wooly socks, don a pair of colorful, textured tights and get in the car. Little Rhodie is calling!
