Do You Own an Iconic White Shirt?

Aaaah, the beauty of the classic white shirt…and why you should own one!

Despite the current heat wave, pre-fall merchandise is arriving in the stores now, so naturally there are some colors that crossover seasons.

White is one of them. It looks sophisticated, current, great with a tan and if you shop carefully it can be your go-to feel-good fall item that will always look fresh and crisp.

I am talking about the ever classic, essential white shirt of course!

From the likes of Cate Blanchett, Carolina Herrera, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Hutton, Sharon Stone and of course Audrey Hepburn, the white shirt has stood the test of time.

Through-out the generations, the styles have changed dramatically but somehow the classic white shirt (albeit it potentially a bit boring) seems to be what I uncover in the back of closets the most often. Reasons heard as to why it never gets worn – I feel frumpy, I hate to iron, I look like a banker, I just never think to wear it or I have no clue how to style it!

Come on ladies – take a peruse through my most popular Pinterest board – The Essential White Shirt and tell me if any of these shirts look frumpy, bulky or even hum-drum office dress code! Especially when these looks might be paired up with well tailored suits and separates including your traffic stopping pair of jeans.

In 1992, Anna Wintour featured ten supermodels on the cover of the 100th anniversary special edition of American Vogue. They all wore the same classic white shirt from the Gap, tied at the waist to make it fashionably edgy.

Today, styles abound from designer labels such as Anne Fontaine, Chanel, Herrera, Lafayette,St. John and Ralph Lauren to medium priced labels such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, White House / Black Market and Talbots. Pretty much every store and every label will have some sort of white shirt in their line. It is a staple and they know if they don’t carry it, you will shop elsewhere for it.

Your job however, is to take the look to the next level. Step it up from the fitted button down by looking for styling details such as mixed media fabrications, fancy buttons, strategically placed bows or chiffon, double-edge seams, and asymmetrical collars, cuffs and bottoms. The possibilities are endless. After all this is a shirt that has been hundreds of years in the making!

pinterest.comIf I were shopping for just that one item for you, I know I could gather at least 20 different fabulous white shirts throughout any given mall for you to try on. The point being – don’t just buy the first white shirt that you come across!

Do an online search first, see what comes up when you Google women’s white shirts and go from there. Choose by fabric, style, price-point and fit! Be courageous and think outside of the box.

Then of course style it with both fabulous jewelry and swagger!

KeatonPinterest.comYou just might be rocking your new white shirt on your next night on the town!

Summer Pedaling In Style

How was your 4th of July? I am writing from New Hampshire today – you know that State – Live Free or Die. In the summer, this is translated as the 4th of July that runs through November – aka – fireworks are legal here. We even have a store called Fireworks R Us!  The proud residents and the vacation imports dressed like flags, fireworks, roman candles, Betsy Ross, you name it.

Who started this practice of theme dressing anyway?

Even the ugly Christmas sweater now has its own website, themed parties and networking groups.

What is this innate desire to be like each other? What ever happened to ‘independent’ thinking? (Good one Doreen!)

As the calendar progresses, so does this ritual:

  • Ordinary office workers don pumpkin sox on Halloween.
  • Thanksgiving trussers’ wear anything that looks like it came straight from Sherwood Forest.
  • New Years Eve revelers could light up Time Square without the dropping ball!
  • Nurses and schoolteachers seem to have a special affection for Valentines Day, wearing anything with red hearts and passing out kisses.
  • Let’s not assume this is an American affliction – take a look at St Patrick’s Day – green everywhere including in your beer mug!

So there went the 4th of July, complete with red, white & blue cakes, jello molds, tablecloths and aprons! Every email that came in this month had something about wearing red, white & blue as if it were a dire warning that you wouldn’t be on trend and certainly wouldn’t be invited to next years big barbecue if you arrived inappropriately dressed.

Did you grab the star hosiery, the red jellies, the white shorts, the navy tank top and the trio bottle of hair dye? Did you hang the flag on your porch, boat, truck, bicycle or visor?

Reality check…going too crazy with the holiday themes is just a tad tacky. Embracing a color story for holiday-sake, now that could be perfectly acceptable!

Here are some timeless ideas for your red, white and blue summer statement that are probably NOT one-shot wonders! They just might be staples already living in your closet, or staples that should be living in your closet! Remember – this was Independence Day – show your independence by dressing with purpose – the purpose being to look fabulous and feel comfortable and not look like it is a costume!

The White Pant – But Wait – Maybe a Skirt?

This could be shorts, capri’s, skinnies, straight, bootcut or even a skirt! And oh wait again – they could be red or navy! The only requirement – they must fit and flatter! No visible panty lines, no cellulite peeking through too tight a fit, no muffin tops and no too-short or see-through skirts.

A white linen or denim shirt or a denim jacket

Just bump up the top half with a loose and crisp white linen shirt or top your tank with a fitted denim shirt or top it all with an edgy denim jacket. Try to not always be the sweater girl!

A Pop of Color Shoe

Red seems the obvious choice, however if Dorothy shoes are not your style then wear a neutral color and pop a red scarf, handbag or hat to finish the look. You don’t have to search out flag motifs or star graphics to look explosively festive.

Then there is always taking your style one step further…who said you can’t be the best dressed woman in the room?

Having trouble getting dressed with purpose? Here’s a summer special!

No Dockers Required on Date Night!

OMG – We women work so hard at pulling it all together and then our guys show up in butt-baggy Dockers – 24/7! 😫

Time to revolt, speak our minds and offer solutions. How often have I said you are not well dressed until you are well-tailored! Too many clients to count have commented, “You made me over, if only you could work with the men in my office, my spouse/brother/son/father!”  Well yes I can. My expertise is in menswear as well as womens-wear having worked in both men’s custom clothing and off-the-rack and having been a buyer in the men’s market for over many years. There is not a man I cannot dress with purpose! But let me share some tips so you can dive in on his behalf.

The biggest complaint that significant others voice is that their man looks good going to the office and he looks like crap the rest of the time – which of course is all the time they get to spend with them. Men often use the same lame line that women do, “I have to dress well at the office 80-hours a week, so when I am not working, I don’t want to even think about what I put on.” Lame, lame, lame.

It takes the same effort to put on a pair of well fitted jeans or khakis as it does to pull on those stupid baggy sweatpants. 😩

It takes the same amount of time and effort to pull a collared polo over your head as it does to pull a Patriots T-shirt over that noggin. 😱

Another common complaint heard by the ‘other’ members of the household is that men never throw anything away. NOTHING is ever worn out enough in the eyes of a dude. “It’s still fine. I don’t need a replacement.” But the minute that car chamois is a tad worn, it’s off to the auto store to replace it!

Let’s dive in dudes…and yes ladies…please forward this article or simply shop with purpose and gift them the Gift of Style with me and let me handle it for you – both of you! 😍

Step 1 – Realize that, just like female bodies, not all male bodies are built alike. But of course, we have already noticed that, why else do we continue to go to co-ed gyms? 😜

Step 2 – Know their body, like their body (what other option is there,) and dress their body. As the frequent readers already know, the best tool in his style toolbox will also be the tape measure! Measure his waist (or in many cases what he calls his waist), his inseam and his out-seam.

Step 3 – Figure out the fit for him, because if you leave it up to him he is going to always choose the RELAXED fit, because after all, he is relaxing, which is why he is sporting the balloon sweats.

Here are the choices of styles – easy to navigate!

Skinny Tapered – Skinny through seat and thigh – narrow leg opening

Slim Tapered – Slim through seat and thigh – slim leg opening

Slim – Slim through seat and thigh – straight leg opening

Straight – Straight through seat and thigh – straight leg opening

Athletic – Roomy through seat and thigh – tapered leg opening

Classic – Roomy through seat and thigh – straight leg opening

Relaxed – Full through seat and thigh – straight leg opening

Step 4 – Move to the next category! A good fitting pair of pants deserves a good fitting shirt! Yes, they too come in different fits. No longer do men have to deal with a billowy back or tuck 18-inches of fabric into their pants! Shop with purpose!!

Simple – nothing left to do now other than make sure he isn’t always wearing boat shoes!

Pop a Pair of Printed Pants This Summer

Are you wondering how to pop some colors this summer? Is white your idea of color? Come on girlfriend, get with the program and pack away your neutrals.

As always, let’s start from the bottom up.

Printed pants are all the rage and you can certainly incorporate one pair of printed pants into your white jean rotation this season.

Don’t be the girl that always shows up in the white capris – yawn, yawn. Let’s add a little spice to that cocktail mix!

But before jumping into the pool, let’s be sure we can find a pair that suits your body type and comes together as an actual outfit. We are not looking to shop for a one-shot-wonder that never comes out of your closet to play!

If you’re going to incorporate bright summer colors in your pattern (and of course you are) be sure to balance it off with something simple and solid on the top such as solid sleeveless shells or blazers.

When you are creating the daytime look, a white fitted T-shirt is a great option with a statement necklace and a colored sandal.

If you’re going for the evening look perhaps a simple sassy silk top paired with a sexy heel and accessorized with chandelier earrings.

Be sure to realize that the pant itself is a statement piece so make sure you like the pattern. As always, I ask you to determine if you are a floral gal or a geometric gal. To determine that, look around your house and see what you have accessorized your home with as far as the patterns on your upholstery or your artwork. You can also look at your scarf collection and see what types of patterns you have purchased in the past. I recommend choosing a small or repeating pattern so the pants aren’t the first thing to enter the room.

Once you have brought patterned pants top-of-mind and you walk into the stores you are going to start seeing patterned pants everywhere – I mean everywhere!

Shopper warning – do not pick up the first pair that you see. Shop like a stylist and walk through every designer’s collection and see what they have first and then circle back and only pick up the patterns that you absolutely like.

Be sure to take two sizes of each into the dressing room so that you don’t find yourself naked in there with no store help to assist you. (There’s the beauty of shopping with me – I average 10,000 steps on my Fitbit every day while doing my client’s running!)

Once you don the pants, double-check yourself in the mirror to make sure that big Gerber Daisy isn’t sitting dead center on your crotch or your rear end.  If you don’t like what the flower accentuates – don’t pick that Daisy!

Remember that the pattern pant is the star of the show so keep everything else simple so as not to look like a clown.

Be conscious of the body balance you are creating.  If you are wearing the wide leg silk pants, choose a fitted top and vice versa, if you are wearing a fitted pant, choose something free-flowing on the top.

With both choices, choose a shoe that continues one of the colors in the pattern or choose a completely neutral shoe as both will elongate the leg.

Drop a Dress for your Spring Events

Getting dressed doesn’t have to be complicated. It can simply be The Power of 3! A dress, a necklace and a pair of shoes. Okay, okay, maybe you need a sweater or a jacket, and maybe you are a scarf girl – but seriously, what’s easier than a dress?

The problem is that most women don’t shop for dresses until an occasion shows up on their calendar and they realize their boring black work pants just aren’t going to cut it on the dance floor!

My advice? You should be shopping for dresses all year long! Why don’t you? Maybe it is the shoe or hosiery thing? Come on – you can search shoes by the COMFORTABLE category on Zappos and you can go without hosiery if you’ve got good gams or you can buy toe-less hosiery. Yes, that is a thing – or rather a thong thing – a toe thong thing that is!

Admit it, you feel prettier in a dress…you feel feminine…and you simply feel…well…dressed up! Remember dressing up? Time to do it again. Bring out the inner girl and let her dress up and party like she used to.

Here are a few options in 3 categories – sheath dresses, fit and flare dresses and midi dresses. All work appropriate and party appropriate because it’s all in the accessories. So be sure to shop shoes and necklaces while you are perusing the dresses so you can party in style!

Fitted sheaths play up your lines and helps create curves…

Stripe Print Sheath   Pleated Sheath Dress   Eliza Crepe Sheath

Floral Border Sheath    Belted A-Line

Fit & flare dresses enhance your upper body while the A-line bottom helps hide wider hips…

Striped Fit & Flare     Seamed Knit Fit & Flare

Print Fit & Flare       Color block Fit & Flare

Vacation Packing With Purpose

There are many perks that come with being an image consultant, personal stylist, author and speaker. The main perk is meeting fabulous women everyday. Whether it is someone who has found me online, been referred by other happy clients, has read one of my many articles on BA50 or my weekly style blog or has even purchased my book on Amazon from somewhere around the globe – I eventually manage to ‘meet’ them. Meet them online, engage in complimentary consults, exchange photos or ideas, speak at their corporate offices or wind up in their closets! No matter the gateway to entry – the bottom line is, it is fabulous! This week was no different. In addition to my regular social ying yang – Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn – I attended two terrific women’s conferences this week – at one I was a speaker at and the other I was an exhibitor, giving me the opportunity to both give and receive. My conversations were enjoyable and enlightening (women are such good sharers)!

The second major perk from helping clients figure out their wardrobes and how to shop with purpose, is that it helps me as well!

I just returned from an amazing vacation in the British Virgin Islands. Much to my delight, as I searched, shopped and blogged for others, I found all of my vacation ‘must-haves’ and it was a clear and concise short list and I actually wore what I brought (with the exception of the mandatory white ankle jeans) because it was too freiking hot – like we didn’t know that was going to happen!

I’ll share my insider summer wear secret – Athleta is awesome! Their products are good quality, their customer service is top notch, their catalogues are spot on and their website is clean, clear and concise – what’s not to like? I like it so much I am going to be holding a few private events in their stores in the upcoming months. Key words here – private events. Email me if you would like to be on that list – subject line Private Event.

Here’s my short list for Island traveling – by category of course. I know you frequent readers are rolling your eyes now!

Starting from the bottom up – another common theme.

One pair of walking sandals – they don’t have to be beautiful – they have to be comfortable, waterproof and packable. I brought Merrels.

One pair of snazzy lightweight breathable sneakers – for Full Moon beach parties when your toes might need a bit more protection from the moon drinkers…wink, wink. I brought my
Ellen Degeneres sneaks.

One pair of amazingly lightweight loose fitting navy ankle pants -perfect for the airports, the cold planes and airport photo opps as seen here with my fav Steph Curry! 2 pair of swim shorts – one black, one navy – for bopping around the Islands and ocean dipping in between – they dry in minutes!

For tops I brought a matching navy cross strap tankini swimsuit top that of course matched the shorts and allowed for quick dips in the aqua waters and picked up a shirred band bottom for days when I wanted to be a bit more ‘cheeky’ at the pool (but I always had my swim skirt handy in my bag for let’s say, after a poolside lunch!

Then of course there were all the other activities in the dangerous and damaging sunshine. I sported this sleeveless top over my swimsuit to keep my back from being burned while snorkeling and sported the long sleeved top while sailing from amongst the Islands.

Then of course you need a zip-up windbreaker for if and when the weather whips up! Throw a bright white topper in the mix!

Lastly – something soft and cozy for hanging out under the stars – this beyond soft sweatshirt will become your summer staple!

And the only two accessories you need are your matching Swell bottle and a fabulous big hat to protect your face and hide your beach hair!

That’s it! You are dressed and all of these items fit in a carry-on! Who wants to waste Island time standing at baggage claim! Pack your bags with purpose and take lots of pics!

Dressing With Confidence

Here’s the question – do you want to dress like working woman (at home) June Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver or Mary Richards (in the newsroom) of the Mary Tyler Moore Show?  Nowadays, the lines are blurred, the glass ceilings are cracking and the dress codes include something ridiculous called Casual Fridays. What’s a woman to do? Where to turn, where to shop, what to buy, what to wear? Are you unsure what your image should be? Should you fit into the mold or break the mold? Will you be considered creative, or tagged fancy as a fruitcake?  Should you conform to business attire if you have your own business? Should you set your own dress code and dress by a set of rules based on your business type?

Photo: CBS Photo Archives

Photo: CBS Photo Archives

Oooh – those of us who may be over 50 are shuddering at the words ‘a set of rules’ – no way man – I’m too old for a set of rules. I want to fly my own plane – with no assigned seats and bathrooms bigger than phone booths.

I want to wear what I want to wear – I want to be comfortable. When I hear that from a woman, she is really saying – “I have no freaking clue what size I am so consequently I buy the wrong size and either can’t sit down in the pants or need duct tape to hold them up.”

Let’s start with redefining business attire as it pertains to YOU!

What is your business, are you employed or self-employed? For the sake of today’s post let’s say self-employed. After all, many of us are way more discerning with what we do with our time. We know how to say no, except when it comes to volunteering.

When it comes to our business the only annoyance we put up with is the annoyance we create. We are smart enough to know when to back off of our own work load (are we really?) If not really, we have most likely hired a business coach to show us how to back off. We have most likely embraced the notion of a virtual assistant. We have outsourced (or have on our wish list) the future outsourcing of cleaning the house (or at least rug shampooing), ironing shirts (hello dry cleaner), mowing the lawn (4 guys show up and are done in 7 minutes flat – how can that NOT be worth it), grocery shopping (hello Peapod), manicures (pretty sure no one does their own nails anymore), hair care (unless your hair is blue, you most likely have a hairdresser visit scheduled every 8 weeks), cobbler (can’t get black shoe polish on your new manicure), car oil change (if you change your own let me know as I have a 1947 MGTC that could use your expertise), and we’ll stop there. But WAIT – no one to help us get dressed?

Seriously – you are going through the midlife thing, you are a newly termed empty-nester, might have gained or lost a few pounds (the girls not quite happy in the current bra), might be re-entering the workforce, might be staring your own business, might be downsizing your home (or taking over newly empty closets) and you haven’t outsourced your image?

How the heck are you going to get dressed if you don’t know what size you are, what is hiding in the bowels of your closet from play-date days, how to brand yourself for your new business or new job, what to buy, where to buy it or what to budget? Come on now, being better-after-50 means realizing that it’s about damn time you were on the top of your own list. If not now – when?

Let’s fix the things that are fix-able. Let’s work on your image, your style, and your self-confidence. Think back to the last event you attended. Was it was a networking event, a college reunion or even a holiday gathering? How easy was it to see who entered the room wearing confidence and who didn’t? Were you the one walking in feeling loud and proud or were you noticing those who did? It’s time for you to take center stage in your own life. It’s time for you to be loud and proud and make the entrance into your own new chapter (don’t have a new chapter – then write one).

If you are a woman in business who struggles with her image, it’s time for you to outsource your style. Get with the program. Treat yourself – you are so worth it! No matter where you are in the world, there’s a stylist waiting to help you. Shop wisely for the right match to be sure you are compatible. Not sure where to start? Start here – Complimentary Consult – we’ll talk about who you are, where you live, what your budget is, what you struggle with and what your desired outcome is. You have to start somewhere – just know there is help, you don’t have to go it alone. Let’s figure it out once and done so you can rock the room, your promising business and the rest of your life!

Color Yourself Beautiful

Photo Benjamin Norman
NY Times

Trending for Spring – Color, Color, Color!

Let’s celebrate that the need to layer in shades of black and grey is no longer weather mandated. We have officially arrived at the most creative and colorful season of the year, as evidenced by the recent sightings at the Met Gala in NYC. Let’s embrace it and bring it into your everyday life. And there is no better friend to share the color news with, than your closet!

Before we dive into the deep end let’s chat about color when it comes to patterns, which is usually how most women introduce the zing. The first styling questions that usually come up are, “If I am stepping out of my neutral comfort zone should I introduce color as solids or patterns and should my patterns be floral or geometric?”

Let’s look around your home for immediate inspiration. Is your upholstery, curtains or artwork floral or geometric? That just might give you a bit of insight as to what you really are attracted to because you are living with it day in and day out. Then as you peruse the racks, you at least have the pattern-game-plan in mind.

Now mind you, just because you have patterns in your kitchen may not mean they look good on your butt! So, consider all the variables and perhaps your personal expressions would be better worn as a shoe, a scarf or a handbag! All fair game for a pop of color and zing!

But if you are introducing patterns into the basics be sure to pick a pattern where the main color story is actually a color that you are attracted to and would blend with other solid pieces in your wardrobe to be able to make what is commonly referred to as an ‘outfit’! Don’t pick a pattern that is fluorescent shades of lime and fuchsia when the rest of your pre-existing wardrobe pieces are all navy and charcoal. It will remain a one shot wonder in your closet that never comes out to play because it doesn’t match anything.

The other element you have the choice of, is where you incorporate the patterns when it comes to the categories in your wardrobe.

If you are perhaps a fuller-on-the-top gal, then you might opt to keep your solids on your top-half and add some texture and pattern to your bottom-half on either your pants or your skirts.

And vice versa, if you are a fuller-on-the-bottom gal, you are going to want to keep your solids on the bottom, thereby diminishing the liability, and adding color and patterns above the waist with blouses, sweaters, jackets or scarves. Let’s begin to peruse the racks in both solids and patterns for that missing spark! The following are not specific links ladies, they are idea sparkers for you to keep top of mind as you move about the stores. Let your eyes  guide you to color, no matter the category and shop with abandon!

Wearing Your Heart On Your Tee

There is no denying that today’s street style includes graphic tees. Whether it is politics, causes, preferences or simply a sense of self expression and individuality, we women are putting it out there!

Perhaps it is time for you to jump on the bandwagon and rock a bit of nostalgia yourself. No doubt in your bottom drawer are a few tees that you just can’t part with. Perhaps your college T, your Led Zeppelin T or your Boston Marathon T?

You just have to be sure to pull the look together with a great fitting pair of jeans and maybe a leather (pleather) topper (no Mr. Rogers cardigan with a Micky Mouse tee please!)

Make it look a bit edgy, laid back and cool at the same time! If it is big and baggy, roll the sleeves, knot the bottom and rock a colorful cross-body bag and a pair of studded flats to complete the look.

If your bottom drawer is void of vintage tees or quirky slogans, then shop for just one – one will do the trick to create that laid back summer style. Perhaps it is your favorite band, charity or cause or perhaps you just want to be a bit rebellious. Well I say – rock on to that!

Here are a few ideas to get your juices flowing…

The Beatles
Tressed To Impress
Namastay In Bed
The Most Important Decision
Dream Often
Race For The Cure
Beet It
Karl Lagerfeld
I Need More Space
The Waves Are Calling

Sassy Sneakers Are Back In Style

Let’s stop sneaking around the sneaker issue. Sneaks are cool again girlfriend! Gone are the days when we were fearful of sporting a pair of sneakers when not actually working out! Gone are the days when our only choices were big white leather heavy **it kickers or high-top ROTC looking sneakers.

Face it – summer is coming and casual time should be on the front burner. Think ankle pants, capris, shorts and casual skirts and you can sport a sporty shoe. Heck, drop a dress and pop a mesh slip-on on! We busy women have places to go, things to see, mountains to climb, pooches to walk. Or we just have plain old trips around town, lounging at Starbucks and weekend barbecues. The reasons to sport a sport shoe are endless, at least until Labor Day!

Shop wisely, make sure they are not heavy or stiff, they breath and of course, they look cool!

Here are a few choices of sneakers I came across this week as I perused for vacation fashions.

Josef Seibel
A sweeping toe bumper and smart perforations emphasize the sporty chic of a relaxed leather sneaker.

Ellen Degeneres
Smooth leather trims a sporty, breathable mesh-knit sneaker set on a clean white sole.

Gucci’s classic Ace sneaker gets an infusion of vintage glamour with ornate floral embroidery, a metallic heel and a pastel sole.

Nike Air Force
Air-Sole heel provide ventilation and cushioning while the deep-tread injected sole offers light-as-air comfort and flexibility.

For those of you not fond of laces, here are a few slip-on options!

Michael Kors
A casual-chic sneaker in an of-the-moment, slip-on style

Earth Tangelo
Floral and geometric cutouts lend vintage sophistication to an on-trend slip-on sneaker

Sperry Seaside
A perforated leather upper extends the effortless everyday appeal of a well-cushioned slip-on sneaker

Caslon Eden
Tiny perforations add breathability and distinctive texture to an out-of-the-ordinary sneaker
